Terms of Service

These terms are an agreement between you and Life & Later ("we", "us"). By creating an account, you agree to them.

1. What Life & Later is (and isn't)

Life & Later is a tool for organizing your household's important documents and information, and for sharing access with people you choose. It is not a law firm, financial advisor, or insurance agent, and nothing in it is legal, financial, or tax advice. Storing a copy of a will or other document here does not make it legally valid, and does not replace keeping the original safe or consulting a professional.

2. Your account and sign-in

  • You must be at least 18 and give accurate information.
  • You're responsible for your devices, passkeys, password, email account, and any backup codes, and for activity in your account.
  • We don't provide a back door. Our staff can't restore anyone's access by hand. If you lose your passkeys, you can get back in through the email address on your account after a 24-hour waiting period, which the owners and spouse of your household are told about and can cancel. If you lose access to both your passkeys and that email account, we may be unable to restore your access, so keep your email account secure and name a trustee.

3. Households, spouses, and trustees

The owner of a household decides who has access. Spouses you invite can view and edit everything. Trustees can request emergency access; if nobody with edit access denies the request within the waiting period you set, the trustee receives read-only access to the entire vault. You're responsible for choosing people you trust and for keeping your waiting period and trustees up to date.

4. Your content

You own everything you put in your vault. You give us permission to store, process, and display it only as needed to provide the service to you and the people you've given access. You confirm you have the right to store the information you add, including information about other people.

5. Subscription and billing

  • New households get a 30-day free trial with limited uploads. After that, the service is $2.99/month or $29/year per household, billed in advance through Stripe for the plan you choose until you cancel. You can switch plans from the billing page; the unused part of your current plan is credited toward the new one.
  • You can cancel anytime from the billing page; access continues until the end of the period you've paid for. We don't offer refunds for partial months or years.
  • If your free trial ends without a subscription, or your subscription ends (including when payment fails and isn't fixed), your vault becomes read-only. You and your family can still view, download, and print everything for 90 days. We'll email the household's owners, spouse, and trustees 30, 7, and 1 day before that period ends, and any of them who has access can renew.
  • After 90 days read-only, your vault and everything in it is permanently deleted. Deleted vaults can't be recovered by you, your family, or us. Renewing at any point before then stops the deletion.
  • We may change the price with at least 30 days' email notice.
  • Storage is subject to reasonable limits (currently 1 GB per paid household), which we may raise or adjust with notice.

6. Acceptable use

Don't use Life & Later to store anything illegal, to access someone else's information without permission, to interfere with the service, or to try to get around its security. We may suspend accounts that do.

7. Ending your account

You can ask us to delete your account at any time by emailing privacy@lifeandlater.com. Deletion is permanent. We may end or suspend accounts that break these terms, and we'll give notice where we reasonably can.

8. Availability and disclaimers

We work hard to keep the service available and your data safe, and we keep encrypted backups. But the service is provided "as is", and we can't promise it will always be available or error-free. Please keep originals of important documents in a safe place.

9. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, our total liability for any claim relating to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, and we aren't liable for indirect or consequential damages.

10. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll email account owners at least 30 days before the change takes effect.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
