Privacy Policy

Our promise, in plain words

  • We never sell your information. Not to advertisers, data brokers, or anyone else.
  • We never use it for advertising or to train AI. There are no ads, trackers, or analytics scripts on this site.
  • Nobody here browses your vault. Your documents and their details are encrypted, and we look at vault contents only if you ask us to help with a problem or the law requires it.
  • There's no back door. Nobody at Life & Later can reset your sign-in or let anyone into your vault, including someone claiming to be you. If you lose your phone, you get back in yourself through your email, after a 24-hour safety wait that the people you share your vault with are told about.

What we collect

  • Account details: your name, email address, and household name.
  • What you put in your vault: the people, pets, homes, vehicles, and businesses you add; documents and the files you upload; contacts; notes; and your letter of instruction.
  • Sign-in data: your password (stored only as a one-way hash), passkey public keys, and one-way digests of any backup codes you create.
  • Billing: handled by Stripe. We keep your subscription status, never your card number.
  • How you found us: if you arrive from an ad or another website, we note the campaign name in the link or the name of the referring site (like google.com), and keep it with your household if you sign up. We use it only to count which ads work, and no third-party scripts are involved.
  • Security records: the IP address and browser of each sign-in session, and a log of changes made in your household (who changed what, and when).

How we use it

Only to run Life & Later for you: to store and show your information to you and the people you've invited, send the emails the service needs (invitations, emergency-access notices, password resets, billing notices), process payments, keep the service secure, and meet legal obligations. We don't send marketing email.

How we protect it

  • Document details, notes, addresses, and your letter of instruction are encrypted before they're written to our database.
  • Uploaded files are encrypted before they're stored, and are only ever delivered to members of your household.
  • Everything travels over HTTPS. Signing in requires a passkey (Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or a phone) for anyone who can see a vault.
  • Backups are encrypted and kept for 30 days.
  • Access to our production systems is limited to the people who operate the service, and we use it only to keep Life & Later running.

Who can see your vault

You, and the people you choose: your spouse (full access), and trustees, who see nothing until they request emergency access and the waiting period you set passes without a denial. After that, a trustee has read-only access.

Service providers

We use a small number of companies to run the service, and they may process your data only on our behalf:

  • Amazon Web Services (United States) for servers, encrypted file storage, backups, and email delivery.
  • Stripe for payments.
  • Honeybadger (United States) for error and uptime monitoring. Error reports contain technical details about what went wrong and an account ID, never the contents of your vault.

When we'd share information

Only with the providers above, when you direct us to (for example, inviting a spouse or trustee), or if required by law, such as a valid court order. If we're ever legally compelled to disclose your information, we'll tell you unless we're prohibited from doing so.

Keeping and deleting your information

We keep your information while your account exists. If your subscription or free trial ends, your vault becomes read-only, and after 90 days it is permanently deleted, after the email warnings described in our Terms. To delete your account and everything in it, email privacy@lifeandlater.com. Deleted data is removed from our systems right away and from our encrypted backups within 30 days.

Information about others

Your vault will naturally include information about your family and contacts, including children. You're responsible for having the right to store it. Life & Later isn't intended for use by anyone under 18.

Cookies

We use a single cookie to keep you signed in, and session data needed for security. Before you sign up, it may also remember which link brought you here. No advertising or tracking cookies.

Your rights

You can see and change your information in the app at any time. You can also ask us for a copy of your data or to delete it, and residents of places like California and the EU have additional rights under their laws. Email privacy@lifeandlater.com.

If something goes wrong

If we ever learn of a breach affecting your information, we'll notify you promptly and tell you what happened and what we're doing about it.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll email account owners before the change takes effect.
